Visit to Ripoll

Remarkable monuments worth the visit include the Romanic monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll (9th century), which gave origin to the village and was one of the most important monastic centres in Medieval Catalonia; the church of Sant Pere (home to the Folk Art Museum-Archive); the Lambert Mata Public Library; and the village's historic centre complex.

Equally worthwhile are the bridge over river Teruel and the old Rama farmhouse surrounded by its gardens and a large natural park.

The Monastery of Santa Maria is located in the exact middle of Ripoll's historic centre. It was founded in 879 by count Guifré el Pilós, who handed it over to a community of Benedictine monks for them to run it.

Moreover, aside from walking the streets of Ripoll and admiring its monuments, visitors can partake in some of the village's traditions and typical fairs.

Among the scheduled local celebrations the following stand out:

  • During May: The 40-Hour Fair, Sant Eudald's Fiesta Mayor (Patron Saint's Day, celebrated May 11), and the Wool Fair (following Sunday).
  • During October: the Santa Teresa Fair, an age-old festivity.
  • The well-known Music Festival takes place throughout the summertime.
