- VALLEY OF NÚRIA
The Valley of Núria is yet another interesting recommendation, both for ski-lovers and for anyone interested in staying at a place of great natural beauty. When it snows in the valley of Núria, the whitened mountaintops stand out against an incredibly blue sky. It's leisure in its purest state, and a whole world of opportunities to make the best out of it. The tourist resort is designed to let us enjoy nature in an active way, always in harmony with the natural surroundings. One has resource to every kind of services and activities that make one's stay more nice and fruitful. Depending on the time of the year, specialists may propose excursions, horseback outings, hill climbing, archery circuits, mountain skiing, snow paddling, sledge rides, guided tours, and, for the young, a children's playground that will introduce them to the famous valley by means of different activities. The Shrine of Núria is one of the main attractions. With its beautiful architecture, the legends and traditions hidden behind its stones and its history do make it a must-see. When the outbreak of the Civil War threatened to do away with the Shrine, manager Bonaventura Carrera determined to save what was there of value inside the hermit, beginning with the Holy Virgin. That way, Bonaventura crossed the border with the saintly figurine in his hands, and set out on a difficult pilgrimage to shield the image and make sure that it returned safely to Núria once the war was over. It was well thought of him: indeed, the shrine was sacked. Later on it was turned into a prison, and then into a hospital for convalescent war-cripples, and finally, after the war, it became a sanatorium, taking advantage of the old lodging rooms. Nowadays visitors can once more contemplate the Holy Mary of Núria.
